New Appointment and Renewal Requirement
10.28.21

The U.S. Department of The Treasury’s Office of Foreign Asset Control (OFAC) determines whether an individual or company is authorized to do business in the United States and maintains records of current restrictions and sanctions.

Citizens is prohibited from doing business with any individual or entity on an OFAC restrictions or sanctions list. An OFAC screening is required for agent and agency applications submitted to Citizens on or after October 28.

Citizens now uses Social Security numbers and tax identification numbers (TIN) prior to appointing new and renewing agents, agency principals and agencies for all application types.

The Notice of Collection and Use of Social Security Numbers section of Citizens’ Notice of Privacy Policy has been updated and states:

Introduction Section 119.071(5), Florida Statutes, governs the collection of Social Security numbers by certain government entities, including Citizens. Citizens collects Social Security numbers only in cases where it is specifically authorized to do so or when it is imperative for performance of Citizens’ duties. To protect your identity, Citizens secures your Social Security number from unauthorized access and strictly prohibits the release of your Social Security number to unauthorized parties contrary to state or federal law.
How are Social Security numbers used in the agent appointment process?

Citizens collects Social Security numbers from agents applying to write Citizens insurance during the agent appointment process. Purposes for collection are:

  • Processing eligibility for appointment with Citizens
  • Verifying agent standing with the Florida Department of Financial Services
  • Ensuring compliance with the U.S. Department of Treasury’s Office of Foreign Asset Control requirements

Notes: Citizens will send the Notice of Privacy Policy via email from myAgency to new and renewing agents, agency principals and agencies before they are appointed.

Citizens will freeze any accounts that are listed in the OFAC restricted or sanctioned list
